Choose between an ongoing channel and one episode
If you want whatever your station is showing now, look for its live service. If you want a named episode, use the broadcaster's program search instead. These are different products, even when they carry the same brand. The PBS live-stream FAQ explains that local live streams are limited to their service areas in the US and territories, require no membership fee, and can differ from the broadcast schedule. An episode's separate on-demand availability should not be inferred from its appearance on a channel.
A useful station-selection checklist
- Write down the station's name, not just “PBS.”
- Check the station selected in the official player against the area it serves.
- Read the schedule attached to that stream, including its date and time zone.
- For a missed program, search the exact episode title on the official site rather than repeatedly restarting the live channel.
This separates two common problems: choosing the wrong regional service and choosing the wrong viewing format. Save the official station page with your notes. A search result's thumbnail or an old program description is not enough to establish what the channel is showing at this moment.
What a location error actually tells you
PBS documents location errors caused by inaccurate IP geography. If you believe you are in the eligible area, follow the official device-specific help. Do not treat an error as proof that the station has closed, or a successful connection elsewhere as proof of worldwide rights. Keep the displayed message and device type when asking the broadcaster for help; do not post your address or account details publicly.
Using PocketWorld alongside the broadcaster
Our US TV directory is a discovery starting point, not a list of guaranteed PBS entitlements. Search the available records, compare the station identity and use the original broadcaster for schedules and access decisions. This article does not claim that a particular PBS stream is present in our current catalog. When a matching record is absent, continue at the official source rather than selecting an unrelated channel with a similar logo.
