What Are Near-Earth Objects?
Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) are asteroids and comets with orbits that bring them close to Earth. We track:
- Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs) - Rocky objects passing within 1.3 AU of the Sun
- Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) - Objects >140m that approach within 0.05 AU of Earth
- Near-Earth Comets (NECs) - Icy bodies with close Earth approaches
Size Classifications
- Small - Under 25 meters (atmospheric burn-up)
- Medium - 25-140 meters (regional damage potential)
- Large - 140m-1km (country-scale destruction)
