Missing observations are not proof of no military flights. Ground reports and unknown report ages are excluded. Military is a metadata-based classification, not confirmation of ownership, unit, mission or activity. Coverage is partial; a report is not a guarantee of exact current position.
Category filter
Open aircraft classified in the available public snapshot.
Dated sample
Read individual sources and UTC report times.
US and Canadian context
Distinguish public reception, surveillance and aircraft references.
Classification limits
A label does not establish ownership, unit or mission.
Open the category, then inspect the evidence
The map button selects the military category in Flights mode. It shows available records that PocketWorld's processing assigned to that category; it does not connect to a defence tracking system. Select a displayed aircraft and read its source, report age and available model information. A missing callsign or model remains missing. An aircraft-shaped icon and a category label cannot fill those gaps or establish what the aircraft is doing.
The server-rendered table is a sample of up to fifteen qualifying reports, newest first, rather than a count of every military flight. It excludes ground reports, unknown report ages and reports older than five minutes. An unavailable or stale snapshot has its own message. An empty sample means no qualifying rows were available, not that military activity stopped. The map has separate freshness and display controls and can change as new reports arrive.
What the military classification includes and misses
PocketWorld uses available aircraft metadata and selected address, callsign and operator heuristics. These rules can miss aircraft and can also assign a misleading category. A transport model by itself is not enough: a record with a C-17 type label still needs other classification evidence to enter this filter. Do not use a count here as a fleet size, a readiness measure or a count of missions.
The categories are exclusive. A recognised helicopter type is classified as helicopter before the military rules, so a military-operated helicopter can appear in the helicopter filter instead. Recognised business-jet types also take precedence over callsign-based military guesses, though an earlier address rule can still apply. A country shown in metadata, an aircraft's position and its operator are separate fields. Flying over Canada does not make a report Canadian, just as a US map position does not establish US military ownership.
United States: public reception is not operational surveillance
The FAA's ADS-B FAQ explains that ground-station reception depends on altitude, terrain, transmitter power and receiver sensitivity. Those physical limits are separate from whether a report reaches the public sources available to PocketWorld. A gap on this map cannot establish that a transponder was switched off, that an aircraft landed or that a mission ended.
Use the US public flight tracking coverage guide to understand that distinction. The US regional observations page samples reports by position across categories; it is not another military total. When comparing the two views, retain the report time and classification rather than assuming that every difference is a newly appearing aircraft. This page does not interpret equipment exemptions or offer a legal judgement about an individual flight.
Canada: distinguish a public report from an RCAF aircraft profile
NAV CANADA's ADS-B performance requirements describe its surveillance system and equipment context. They do not establish the completeness of this website's public feed. A Canadian aircraft must be present in an available snapshot, have usable coordinates and a report time, and receive the military classification before it appears in this category.
The Royal Canadian Air Force's CC-177 Globemaster III profile is useful for understanding an official aircraft designation and general airlift role. It is a reference page, not a current position or mission report. Our C-17 aircraft guide supplies model context; matching a model name does not verify a particular aircraft's operator. Keep the official designation, observed address, callsign and source metadata distinct when recording what a public map actually showed.
The Canadian space-based ADS-B coverage guide explains why operational surveillance and a public tracker can show different information. For geographic context, the separate Canadian regional sample uses reported positions rather than operator nationality. Neither that sample nor this category fills in a missing flight route.
A useful record without an invented mission
- Record the public source, observed aircraft identifier and report time.
- Separate the category assigned by this site from a model or operator claim in metadata.
- Check a reference source for general aircraft context while keeping it separate from the observation.
- Describe missing or stale reports as missing or stale; do not infer a destination, unit activity or mission from them.
Return to the flight explorer to change category or inspect broader public coverage. This guide supports reading public observations and aircraft references. It does not provide official fleet accounting, navigation information or confirmation of military operations.
Public reports and classification
Rows retain their public-provider source and report time. The military category is assigned from available aircraft metadata and address, callsign or operator heuristics. It is not an official military inventory, verified unit identity or mission feed. The sample does not query additional aircraft providers.
